Etna & Denning Tornado Memorial Service

One year has passed since Franklin County was impacted by the tornado that hit Etna and Denning. Judge Joe Powell has signed a proclamation recognizing Friday May 25 as an official day of remembrance for our communities’ losses and our efforts to recover from them.

In honor of the lives that were lost and to recognize the efforts of neighbors helping neighbors to recover, a memorial service will be held at Arkansas Tech University‘s Conference Hall on Friday May 25 at 9:00 AM.
Several public officials, including Congressman Steve Womack and Representative Leslee Post, who assisted with the response and recovery efforts will speak. Citizens who lived in the impacted area are encouraged to attend and the public is invited.

Help for Arkansas Tornado Victims

Hi! I wanted to give a quick update on our friends in Denning/Etna. They are still trying to put all the pieces back together since the tornado hit on May 24th. The good news is that you can still help! Along with the need for volunteers, there are many opportunities to give.
The Moving Forward Project is a great way to help out a family or families in need. I’ve written about this project before .  There are applications here at Harry Robinson Buick GMC (6000 S 36th St, Fort Smith AR) or I can email you a copy of all the info. Here’s a video explaining the project in detail.

A big event coming up in September is the Disaster Shower.  Each family affected by the tornado will be given the opportunity to choose items they need for their household. This is such a great idea! I can’t imagine how it would be if I didn’t have an alarm clock or a can opener or a skillet! It would be very eye-opening to reach for them and not find them. I will place a list of needs for this shower in our Facebook in the notes section.  Facebook.com/HarryRobinsonBuickGMC.  Donations for the Disaster Shower need to be turned in no later than Monday Sept. 19th. As always, you can bring them here and we will get them into the right hands.

If you would like to volunteer your time to the effort please contact Elaine Carroll at 479.209.3880.

Thank you for helping!

Tornado Relief: Why Do We Help?

Devastating tornados have been ripping through much of Middle America, including our home states of Arkansas and Oklahoma. There are so many people in need right now. I have been asking myself an easy question; "if I woke up tomorrow and had nothing, what would I need?" That question may sound easy, but it really hits home when you think about it. I would need to brush my teeth, but I don't have a tooth brush or toothpaste. I'd like to eat breakfast, but there is none. I would like to get dressed, but in what? What if I have to face that, and also have the responsibility of children, what shall I feed my baby? How will I change his diaper? These very basic and mindless things, become big obstacles, and the good news is that we can all help.

For those of us who are busy: Text to donate: REDCROSS to 90999, STORM to 80888 (Salvation Army), TORNADO to 50555 (United Way) to give $10. (This charge is added to your phone bill.)

For those of us who are short on cash: toothbrush ($2.97), Towel ($6.00), Baby wipes ($.98), Baby food ($.50 per jar), deodorant ($2.48).  Even if you can just get 1 item, you are still helping.

There are those of us who can volunteer time, give blood; deliver water to the other volunteers, run a chain saw, offer rides, cook meals, and obviously, this list can go on and on.

Harry Robinson Buick GMC is currently a donation drop off for the Joplin relief effort. If you bring your donations by any time this week, we will get them to Van Buren First Church of the Nazarene. This volunteer group is making daily trips to Joplin to drop off supplies and bring help to the people of Joplin.

Our hearts are saddened by the grief that has been caused by the tornados this year. Thank you to all of the relief workers, and to all of you who donate to help your fellow neighbors.
