What is CES?

The Children’s Emergency Shelter is a very important agency for abused and neglected children who live in Arkansas.  Fort Smith Children’s Emergency Shelter provides shelter & care, in a safe, structured home-like environment for children ages 6-17 who have been removed from their home due to neglect and/or abuse. The mission includes allowing kids to just be kids!

Renee, Scott and I (Cathy) had the privilege of touring the Children’s Emergency Shelter in Fort Smith yesterday. Renee is up to speed on CES because of her volunteer work with the Junior League of Fort Smith, and though not exactly familiar with CES, Scott grew up in the foster care system in the state of Kentucky. I have never been to a children’s shelter before, and I am glad I went.

First of all, It’s CRAZY how much food these kids go through! 20,000 meals per year! Yes, they need food donations always! Here’s their daily needs list. Second of all, as kids who just NEED to be just kids, they have a very limited amount of video games, movies, toys, etc. The shelter serves up to 24 kids per night, and has a couple of x-boxes and very few (mostly broken) games. To me, that was an important thing. Kids need kid time & these kids have done nothing to deserve punishment, they have been abused &/or neglected. My final observation, and most importantly, I am so, so thankful to have a CES in Fort Smith. What a blessing to the community! Children’s Emergency Shelter provides a home-like place to over 250 children per year who otherwise would have no place to go.

We are happy the HRBG holiday event, Sierra Fully of Joy 2 and  (now 3), benefits The Children’s Emergency Shelter & The Call (both agencies providing care for local children in the foster care system.) Please come and donate either gifts, gift cards, or money to these kids to help them have a Christmas blessing! Also, Our sales staff is matching donations! I think we have already had a donation challenge. Yes we do!

  1. […] First, I should tell you about The Call & The Children’s Emergency Shelter. The Call’s vision is to have no waiting children in Arkansas foster care, but instead to have waiting, Christian families ready to take them in! Here’s a detailed blog I wrote about them last year: The CALL. Fort Smith Children’s Emergency Shelter provides shelter & care, in a safe, structured home-like environment for children ages 6-17 who have been removed from their home due to neglect and/or abuse. Here’s more about them as well: Children’s Emergency Shelter.  […]
