2021: Grit, Gratitude & a Will-do Spirit

I think it’s fair to say, 2020 seems to have been a year of struggle. The mental struggle of facing a quieter, less busy lifestyle was no small feat for those more extroverted among us. The emotional battle for those taking care of sick family members or who have lost loved ones. The pressure at work to keep the ship afloat during the most uncertain times we have faced in our lifetime. The stress of worrying if we will have a job or if we will be able to pay our bills from month to month. The helplessness of job loss in such volatile times. Frontline workers are putting their lives on the line to do their jobs. God bless those among us who have directly shouldered all of this and more. Therefore, I think using the term “struggle” to define 2020 is fitting.

Facing tough times, if you allow it, does something unique. If we took the opportunity, 2020 taught us invaluable lessons. Just a few byproducts of 2020 were more time around the dinner table, more reflecting on personal goals, more family game nights, more supporting the sick and their families, more refining your job skills, and honing your craft. 2020 gave us more time to fuel our passions. 2020 gave us more time spent in gratitude & prayer or meditation. 2020 made us better if we allowed it.

Now 2021 is giving us a beautiful new opportunity—the opportunity to be better & do better. Be a better example to your children; use the time around the dinner table to teach them important lessons you may have had to learn the hard way. The opportunity to build upon your goals in a way that adds value to your life & the lives of your loved ones. Starting your own Etsy store, volunteering for a meal delivery program, going to nursing school, painting in your spare time just for self-care (and maybe trying your hand at selling your artworks online), yes, 2021 seems to have brought with it something special. Where 2020 taught us grit and gratitude, 2021 seems to have come along to give us confidence, goals & a can do, will do, I’m going to give it my all attitude. And all that combined with gratitude makes us pretty unstoppable this year. I, for one, am excited about it. 😊

What lesson or lessons did you learn in 2020 & how will you use your new-found grit to make your life better in 2021?
